Pelvic pain is common during pregnancy and after giving birth. For the majority of cases this will recover within three months of the birth of the child. In a small group it persists. Pelvic pain is associated with the sensitisation of the structures around the pelvis.

Although the common belief is that pelvic pain is due to laxity of the pelvic ligaments, there is little evidence for this. There is evidence that the changing body postures, physical activity levels, lifestyle change, stress levels and sleep deprivation may combine to sensitization of the pelvic structures promoting pain.
